Can you restart Mounjaro or Wegovy after a break?

Yes, you may be able to restart, but the right approach depends on how long you’ve been without treatment, your previous dose, and your current health.

If you’ve missed several weeks, don’t simply return to your previous dose. Your prescriber may recommend restarting at a lower dose to reduce the risk of side effects.

Taking a break doesn’t necessarily mean starting your treatment journey from scratch. A clinical review can help establish whether restarting is appropriate and what your next steps should be.

Restarting Mounjaro after a break

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide and is taken as a once-weekly injection.

What happens if you miss a Mounjaro dose?

If it’s been four days or less since your missed dose, take it as soon as you remember. If more than four days have passed, skip that dose and continue on your usual scheduled day.

There should be at least three days between injections. Don’t take two doses to make up for one you’ve missed.

If you’ve missed several weekly doses, speak to your prescriber before restarting.

Do you have to restart Mounjaro at 2.5mg?

Not always. You may need a lower dose after a longer break, but this doesn’t automatically mean starting again at 2.5mg.

Mounjaro usually begins at 2.5mg once a week, with the dose increased gradually.

Your prescriber will consider how long you’ve been without treatment, your previous dose, and how you responded before advising on the next step.

Restarting Wegovy injections after a break

Wegovy injections contain semaglutide and are taken once a week.

What happens if you miss a Wegovy injection?

If it’s been five days or less since your missed injection, take it as soon as you remember. If more than five days have passed, skip that dose and continue your usual scheduled day.

Like with Mounjaro don’t take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

If you’ve missed multiple doses, your prescriber may recommend restarting at a lower dose to help reduce digestive side effects.

Do you have to restart Wegovy injections at 0.25mg?

Not necessarily. The dose you restart on will depend on how long you’ve been without treatment and how you previously responded.

Wegovy injections normally begin at 0.25mg once a week, with gradual dose increases.

After a longer break, your prescriber can advise whether it’s appropriate to return to a lower dose.

Restarting Wegovy tablets after a break

Wegovy is also available as a once-daily tablet containing semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the weekly injection.

However, the dosing instructions are different.

What should you do if you miss a Wegovy tablet?

If you miss a Wegovy tablet, skip that dose and take your next tablet the following day at your usual time.

Don’t take an extra tablet to make up for the missed dose.

Can you restart Wegovy tablets after a longer break?

Restarting may be possible, but you should speak to your prescriber before resuming treatment after a longer break.

Wegovy tablets are normally introduced at 1.5mg once daily, with the dose increased gradually.

Your prescriber can review your previous dose, how long you’ve been without treatment and whether you need a lower dose.

Although Wegovy tablets and injections contain the same active ingredient, their doses aren’t directly interchangeable. A prescriber should review any change between them.

What if you stopped because of side effects?

Side effects are one reason people decide to pause or stop weight-loss treatment.

If you experienced nausea, constipation, indigestion or other symptoms, it’s worth discussing what happened before restarting.

Some side effects improve as your body adjusts, but don’t ignore persistent or troublesome symptoms.

Our clinical team can review your experience and help you understand whether restarting is appropriate. Nutritional guidance may also help with managing some common digestive symptoms.

If you experienced severe symptoms, seek medical advice before taking another dose.

Can you change weight-loss treatment providers?

Yes. If you’re receiving weight-loss treatment from another pharmacy, you can choose to move to The Family Chemist, subject to a new clinical assessment.

The process is generally straightforward. You’ll usually need to complete a medical questionnaire and share some details about your previous treatment, including your dose and when you last took it.

We will review your information to establish whether continuing treatment is suitable, and we may also ask for evidence of your previous prescription.

Changing pharmacies doesn’t automatically mean returning to the lowest starting dose, although our prescriber will need to assess what’s appropriate.

What should you consider before restarting?

Before restarting treatment, it helps to have a few details ready:

  • Your last dose: When did you last take your medication, and what strength were you using?
  • Why you stopped: Were side effects, cost, availability or changes in routine a factor?
  • Your current health: Have your weight, medical history, or other medications changed?
  • Your preferences: Is your previous treatment still the right option for you?

Having this information ready can help make your clinical assessment more straightforward.

FAQs

Can I restart Mounjaro after a month off?

Restarting may be possible, but after several missed weekly doses, you shouldn’t assume your previous dose is still suitable. Speak to your prescriber before taking another injection.

Not always. If you’ve missed multiple doses, your prescriber may recommend a lower dose to reduce the likelihood of digestive side effects.

Switching may be possible following a clinical assessment. However, the medicines contain different active ingredients, and their doses aren’t directly interchangeable.

Yes. A new pharmacy will need an appropriate prescription and clinical assessment before supplying prescription-only treatment, even if you’ve received it elsewhere.
