Manage your NHS prescriptions in 5 simple steps
1. Sign up below
Start by filling out the short form at the bottom of this page. This tells the NHS you’d like us to be your nominated pharmacy. It only takes a minute.
2. Request your medication
Use the NHS App or contact your GP directly to request your usual prescriptions. Nothing changes on your GP’s end, they still approve everything as normal.
3. Your GP signs it off
Once your GP checks and approves your order, they send us your prescription electronically. No paperwork, no chasing.
4. Over to our pharmacy team
Within 1 to 2 working days, our pharmacists check everything for accuracy and safety.
Once it’s good to go, we package it up and get it ready for dispatch.
5. Delivery to Your Door
Your medication is sent out using Royal Mail Tracked services. Most orders arrive in 2 to 3 working days in discreet, letterbox-friendly packaging.
You’ll get tracking updates along the way, so you’re never left wondering where your meds are.

NHS Prescription FAQs
Who can use The Family Chemist’s NHS prescription service?
Anyone registered with a GP in England. Whether you take regular repeat medication or need a one-off prescription, you can get your medicines delivered free to your door and manage everything online or from your phone. We accept all valid NHS exemptions and prepayment certificates, you can pay by card and Apple Pay.
How do I nominate The Family Chemist for my NHS prescriptions?
Two ways: complete our short online registration form, or call our team on 0115 850 1944. You’ll need:
- Your full name and date of birth
- Your GP surgery details
- A list of your regular medication
Once you’re registered, we connect your account to the NHS and confirm your GP surgery. From then on your prescriptions come to us automatically, no extra steps each time.
What information do I need to sign up?
When registering, we’ll ask for:
Your full name and date of birth
Your GP surgery details
A list of your regular medication
Your NHS number (optional, but helps speed up registration)
Do I need to speak to my GP before using your service?
Usually not. If your GP already issues electronic prescriptions, then you just need to nominate us – your prescriptions come straight to us without you contacting the surgery.
It’s worth speaking to your GP if you’re starting a new medication or have a specific concern. Our pharmacists are also here to help at any point.
Is your NHS Prescription delivery really free?
Yes in England. We cover the cost of delivery, and every order is sent tracked for peace of mind — there are no added fees for using our service.
If you normally pay for NHS prescriptions, you’ll pay the standard NHS charge of £9.90 per item. That’s the same charge as any pharmacy in England, and it’s set by the NHS, not by us.
How do I pay?
If you’re exempt from charges, just tell us your exemption reason when you register. If you pay for prescriptions, we’ll email you a secure payment link once we receive your prescription from your GP. To get same-day dispatch, please pay by 4pm. We accept all major cards, Apple Pay and NHS prepayment certificates.
I don’t pay for prescriptions. Can I still use your service?
Yes. Tell us your exemption reason when you sign up, or update it anytime in the ‘Exemptions’ section of your account. You won’t be charged.
Can I use my NHS prepayment certificate (PPC)?
Yes, we accept both standard and HRT-only PPCs. Add your certificate details in your account and we’ll apply it automatically to every order.
A PPC works like a season ticket: you pay one flat fee and then nothing per item, which usually saves money if you pay for more than a few items a year.
When should I order my repeat prescriptions?
Order 10 working days before you’re due to run out. That gives your GP time to approve the request and us time to check, dispense and dispatch your medication.
Orders often arrive sooner, but the 10-day window means you won’t be caught short.
How long does delivery take?
Most orders arrive within 2–3 days via Royal Mail Tracked 48. Refrigerated or urgent items are sent on a faster tracked service. Either way you’ll get tracking updates, so you always know where your order is.
Can I have my medication delivered elsewhere (e.g. work or carer’s home) or change my address?
Yes. We deliver free to any address in England that suits you — home, work, a family member’s or a trusted neighbour’s. You can also nominate a safe place for when you’re out. Update your delivery address anytime in your online account.
Is the packaging discreet?
Yes. Everything is sent in plain, unbranded packaging — no logos, no pharmacy name and nothing to show what’s inside.
What if I miss my delivery?
Don’t worry. The courier will leave a card with instructions to arrange redelivery or collection, and you can set a safe place in advance to avoid missing it. If you need a hand, call us on 0115 850 1944.
Can I speak to someone if I need help ordering or managing my prescriptions?
Yes. Our UK-registered pharmacists are available Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm, for questions about side effects, dosage, interactions or anything else about your medication. Call 0115 850 1944 or email [email protected]
