How it works

If you are travelling with medication or medical devices, you can use this letter to easily pass through security or customs.

This letter can also help you if you need to replace lost, damaged, or stolen medication, or can help you seek medical attention abroad.

What do our Travel Letters include?

Our travel letters should detail the following:

  • all prescribed medication,
  • all necessary monitoring and dispensing equiptment,
  • the necessity of carrying medication such as Mounjaro, Wegovy, and needles etc. in your hand luggage,
  • contact details for the event that information or advice is needed during long trips.

Do I need a medical travel letter?

According to current security regularly, any liquid items that you carry in your hand luggage must be in containers of 100ml or less. However, essential medication for your trip is an exception with the appropriate documentation.

If you need to carry medication in larger quantities, it is important to authenticate this with the appropriate authorities beforehand.

If you need to carry essential medical equipment through airport security, you are permitted to do so in your hand luggage. However, you must carry documentation provided by a qualified medical professional. It is recommended that you show this letter to airline staff.

Do I need to contact my airline before travelling?

Yes. The Civil Aviation Authority’s Advisory Health Unit recommends that those traveling with essential medication should always contact their airline prior to travelling to discuss medical devices that they need to take on board an aircraft.

Some airlines will require you to notify them of your medical equipment before the flight and fill in additional paperwork. If you fail to do so, you may not be allowed to board the aircraft with your medication.

Do I need to store weight loss injection with an ice pack whilst travelling?

You should only take enough medication with you to cover your trip.

Weight loss injection pens such as Mounjaro, Wegovy, and Nevolat can be kept for up a month (30 days) at a temperature below 30°C. Information on the medication-specific storage conditions can be found in your Patient Information Leaflet provided with each injection pen.

Pens must not be frozen, and should not be placed in your check-in bag, as they are likely to freeze in the airplane luggage compartment.

If you are travelling for less than 30 days and the temperature is below 30°C, you will not need an ice pack.

If you would would wish to take an ice pack or temperature-controlled pouch in your check-in back and then use it once you land if the temperature is likely to be above 30°C.
