Period Delay tablets, also known as Norethisterone, are a synthetic version of the hormone progesterone. Each month periods are triggered by a drop in your progesterone levels. Therefore, by taking norethisterone your hormone level remains high allowing you to delay your period for up to 17 days. Norethisterone cannot permanently stop your period, but long enough so you can enjoy those special occasions with ease.
Are there any side effects?
Norethisterone is the generic version of Utovlan and like all medications, they can sometimes cause side effects. It doesn’t cause any long-term impact on your fertility or menstrual cycle. These side effects are completely manageable. Some of these can be:

How do I use Norethisterone?
You have to take 1 tablet 3 times a day, to be started 3 days before your expected period. Norethisterone should be taken for no longer than 2 days. Once you stop taking Norethisterone your period should occur within 2-3 days and your cycle should continue as usual after this.
What happens If you forget to take your Norethisterone?
Don’t worry if you forget to take a tablet. It happens, just take it as soon as you remember, unless your next dose is approaching. Simply, miss the dose and continue to take the rest of the medication as normal. Whatever you do, do not take a double dose to make up for your missing dose.
Taking Norethisterone with other medications?
Norethisterone tablets are safe and can be taken with other medications such as paracetamol, ibuprofen, and aspirin. Contact your local doctor or pharmacist for more advice if you have any concerns.
Delayed Menstrual Cycle and COVID vaccines
COVID vaccines are becoming part of day-to-day life and are most likely an annual recurrence. I vouch for them, but each person responds to them differently. In a study published in BMJ medicine researchers reported a one-day delay in their periods compared to patients who did not get vaccinated. The researchers concluded that “Covid-19 vaccination is associated with a small and likely to be a temporary change in menstrual cycle length but no change in menses length.” That being said the effective way of delaying your period is to take Norethisterone tablets.
Any long-term delay in the menstrual cycle would most likely not be associated with the vaccine and it would be reasonable to seek medical care for further evaluation.
