Key takeaways

  • The Wegovy pill contains semaglutide, the same GLP-1 receptor agonist used in Wegovy injections, only it’s taken every morning as a tablet.
  • Clinical trials suggest it can help people lose around 15% of their starting weight on average, making it one of the most effective weight loss tablets to date.
  • It causes broadly similar weight loss to standard 2.4mg Wegovy injections, although higher 7.2mg injections cause more weight loss on average.
  • Oral semaglutide may be an alternative to injections for needle-phobic people, frequent travellers, or those who simply find a daily pill more convenient.
  • Although an effective stand-alone treatment, it may be an option for long-term weight management, including people who wish to move from injections to tablets.
  • Beyond weight loss, semaglutide reduces the risk of serious heart problems and is being studied for its effects on food noise, mental wellbeing, and menopausal weight gain.
  • Oral Wegovy is not currently available in the UK but is expected to launch following regulatory approval by autumn 2026.
  • The Wegovy tablet is part of a wider shift towards oral GLP-1 treatments, with medicines like orforglipron also expected to expand treatment options in the future.

The Wegovy tablet promises something many people have been waiting for: the weight loss benefits of semaglutide without the need for weekly injections.

Clinical trials show oral Wegovy delivers similar average weight loss to Wegovy, making it one of the most effective weight loss tablets ever developed, and early research suggests it may even offer benefits beyond the scales.

Although not yet available in the UK, it’s the first weight loss pill of its kind and has the potential to be one of the biggest developments in obesity treatment since Mounjaro and Wegovy first arrived.

What is the Wegovy tablet?

The Wegovy tablet is a new obesity treatment that contains the medicine semaglutide, the same active ingredient found in Wegovy injections. Only this time, it’s delivered as a once-daily pill, which must be taken on an empty stomach to ensure it is absorbed properly.

Once absorbed, it works in exactly the same way. By mimicking a hunger hormone called GLP-1, it:

  • Helps you feel fuller for longer after eating
  • Lowers your appetite and helps you feel more satisfied with smaller portions
  • Makes it easier to eat less without constant food noise and cravings

Over time, this causes gradual weight loss. In clinical trials, participants taking the highest strength tablet lost around 14% of their starting weight on average. This places it among the most effective weight loss tablets ever developed and much closer to the results only before seen with injections.

Like all GLP-1s, Wegovy weight loss pills can cause side effects. The most common are:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Vomiting

Side effects are typically worse when treatment is first started or doses are increased. However, they are usually mild to moderate and often improve over time, though managing GLP-1 side effects by changing how and what you eat can also help.

Why the Wegovy pill matters in 2026

Until now, the most effective weight loss medications all had one thing in common: they came in an injection pen. For people who felt comfortable with injections, that wasn’t a problem. For others, it was enough to put them off treatment entirely or be left with the option of less effective weight loss pills.

The Wegovy tablet changes that. People can now get the benefits of a GLP-1 without the needles

This change may sound small, but it could have a big impact. Obesity is now understood to be a chronic condition requiring long-term management. While convenience doesn’t replace clinical suitability or long-term lifestyle support, for many people, swallowing a pill each morning feels easier than taking a weekly injection indefinitely.

But the Wegovy tablet is also part of a much bigger trend. Pharmaceutical companies are racing to develop the next generation of obesity treatments, including new oral GLP-1s such as orforglipron and more advanced multi-agonist therapies that target multiple appetite pathways at once.

As more treatments reach the UK market, patient expectations are likely to change. The conversation is no longer just about whether weight loss medication works and whether it’s suitable, but how convenient, effective, and sustainable it is to take long-term.

The Wegovy tablet marks the beginning of this next phase of obesity treatment.

How do Wegovy weight loss pills compare to injections?

Based on current evidence, the Wegovy tablet is broadly as effective as the Wegovy injection. In clinical trials, participants lost an average of:

For people who need additional support, there is a higher 7.2mg Wegovy injection. This stronger dose has been shown to cause an average 19% weight loss over 72 weeks in clinical trials, and there is no tablet equivalent of this dose. This might make injections the better option for some people.

However, the bigger difference and perhaps more important consideration is convenience.

Injections need to be stored correctly, are harder to travel with, and involve disposing of used needles. Self-injecting also isn’t something that every patient wants to do. The tablet removes these concerns. There’s no pen device, needles, sharps disposal, or refrigerated storage requirements.

That said, to work properly, the Wegovy oral pill must be taken on an empty stomach with no more than 120ml of water and at least 30 minutes before food, drink, and other medicines. Some people find this far less convenient than a once-weekly injection they can do and forget about.

Neither option is inherently better. The right choice depends on which treatment best fits your lifestyle and allows you to take it consistently over the long term.

Oral Wegovy: An option for weight maintenance?

One of the biggest potential advantages of the Wegovy tablet is that many people may find it easier to take a tablet long-term than continue with weekly injections. This is particularly important because, for many people, the challenge isn’t losing weight — it’s keeping it off.

Weight regain is common after stopping treatment. In the STEP 1 extension trial, participants regained around two-thirds of the weight they had lost within a year of coming off semaglutide, and similar regain is seen after stopping Mounjaro safely. Many people need ongoing maintenance therapy to maintain their results.

While the Wegovy oral pill could be taken to support weight loss and then continued long-term, it may also serve as a maintenance-only treatment for people who have achieved weight loss with injections and wish to switch to a daily tablet.

Of course, medication alone isn’t enough to stop weight regain. Long-term success still depends on habits such as eating a balanced diet, staying physically active, and prioritising sleep.

Wegovy tablets vs orforglipron, another oral GLP-1

The Wegovy tablet isn’t the only GLP-1 weight loss pill on its way to the UK. orforglipron is another medicine from the new generation of oral treatments that has the potential as a standalone weight loss treatment and an alternative maintenance option following injections.

Both tablets work via the GLP-1 pathway, support weight loss by reducing appetite and cravings, and cause similar digestive side effects. But there are some key differences:

  • How the tablets are taken: While oral Wegovy has strict timing instructions and restrictions around food and drink, orforglipron doesn’t. As long as you take it at roughly the same time each day, you can fit it into any part of your daily routine.
  • Long-term clinical research: Wegovy weight loss pills may be new, but semaglutide isn’t. Semaglutide injections for weight loss have been available since 2023, while oral semaglutide has been used as a diabetes treatment for even longer. Orforlgipron is a much newer medicine that hasn’t yet built up the same level of long-term clinical experience.
  • Average weight loss: Orforglipron shows slightly less average weight loss in clinical trials: roughly 12% of starting body weight compared to 15% for the Wegovy tablet. That said, these figures are averages taken from different trials. Some people lose more weight, others less.

Both treatments could change the future of obesity care, and as more oral GLP-1s become available, the choice of treatments that fit lifestyle and preferences will become more than ever before.

Benefits beyond weight loss: Heart health, menopause & mood

Most people start looking into the Wegovy tablet because they want to lose weight. But research suggests that the benefits of this new oral GLP-1 go beyond the scale.

The Wegovy tablet and heart health

The potential link between Wegovy and heart health became a big talking point after the SELECT trial, a study that followed over 17,000 obese or overweight adults with a history of heart disease.

The study found that participants taking semaglutide had a 20% lower risk of major cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks or strokes, compared to the placebo. The findings were so impressive that Wegovy injections are now approved in the UK to lower the risk of serious heart problems in people living with obesity.

It’s worth noting that participants in SELECT received semaglutide by injection (2.4mg) rather than as a tablet. However, because the Wegovy tablet contains the same active ingredient, it is expected to provide comparable benefits when taken at a bioequivalent dose.

That doesn’t mean that everyone taking the Wegovy tablet will receive heart-health benefits. But it does show that GLP-1 treatments are not simply weight loss medicines — they have a far wider role in improving long-term health outcomes.

The Wegovy pill and menopause

Weight gain is one of the most common complaints during perimenopause or menopause. Changes in hormone levels can affect appetite, sleep, insulin sensitivity, and where the body stores fat, making it easier to gain weight and harder to lose it.

While the Wegovy tablet isn’t officially licensed for menopausal weight gain, it is considered safe for these women and is effective. In an analysis from the STEP and OASIS trials, meaningful weight loss was seen in premenopausal, perimenopausal, and postmenopausal women taking semaglutide, including those taking 25mg of oral semaglutide.

But it’s important to keep expectations realistic. The Wegovy tablet is not a menopause treatment and won’t directly treat symptoms such as hot flushes, sleep disturbances, or mood changes. Its role is supporting weight management in menopausal women who meet the criteria for treatment.

The Wegovy tablet and mental well-being

One of the changes many people feel when taking semaglutide is a reduction in “food noise” — the thoughts about food and cravings that some people experience almost constantly. Alongside weight loss, this can positively impact confidence, emotional well-being, and quality of life

Researchers have taken the link between semaglutide and mental well-being one step further. A 2026 study found that people with diagnosed mental health conditions taking semaglutide for diabetes were less likely to see their symptoms of depression and anxiety worsen compared to people taking other diabetes medicines.

While encouraging, this doesn’t mean the Wegovy tablet is a treatment for depression, anxiety, or other mental health conditions. If you are experiencing mood changes, worsening depression, or suicidal thoughts while taking treatment, you should seek medical advice immediately.

Beyond the scales
“Reducing ‘food noise’ may improve more than eating habits; it can positively influence confidence, emotional well-being, and quality of life.”

Frequently asked questions

When will oral Wegovy be available in the UK?
No exact launch date for the Wegovy tablet has been confirmed. It has passed the MHRA review process and will become available for private prescribing if approved. Based on usual timelines for regulatory review, it could be here within the next few weeks.

Is the Wegovy tablet really as simple as taking a daily pill?
It is a once-daily pill, but it has strict instructions. To work properly, Wegovy tablets must be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with no more than 120ml of water. You then need to wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking any other medications.

Why does the Wegovy tablet have to be taken on an empty stomach?
The Wegovy tablet must be taken on an empty stomach to work properly. Semaglutide is absorbed very poorly by the body when taken orally. The restrictions around food and drink are there to help the body absorb as much of the medicine as possible and work as intended.

Is oral semaglutide as effective as Wegovy injections?
Based on clinical trials, the highest strength Wegovy tablet produces similar weight loss on average to the standard 2.4mg Wegovy injection. However, everyone responds differently to treatment, and results vary depending on lifestyle, starting weight, and whether you take it consistently.

Can I switch from Wegovy injections to the Wegovy pill?
Yes, most people will be able to switch from Wegovy injections to the tablet, though switching GLP-1 treatments should always be discussed with your prescriber. It’s an exciting maintenance option for people who have lost weight with injections and prefer to continue treatment with a daily pill.

What are the most common side effects of Wegovy weight loss pills?
The most common side effects of the Wegovy tablet are digestive symptoms like nausea, vomiting, constipation, and diarrhoea. They are usually worse when starting treatment or increasing your dose, but most people find they quickly settle down once the body gets used to the medicine.

Does the Wegovy tablet help with food noise?
Yes, many people report having less food noise, which is one of the ways that the Wegovy tablet supports weight loss. Not constantly thinking about food can make it much easier to eat in a calorie deficit and lose weight. However, it’s important to remember that everyone’s experience is different.

How much could the Wegovy tablet cost in the UK? Official pricing has not yet been announced. However, many experts expect pricing to be broadly comparable to Wegovy treatments currently available privately.

Can you buy the Wegovy tablet online in the UK? Not yet.

Once approved, it is expected to be available through regulated UK prescribers and pharmacies.
