What is Medroxyprogesterone?
Medroxyprogesterone, previously sold under the brand name Provera, is a synthetic progestogen which can safely allow you to delay your period for up to 17 days. During your period your body has a natural fall in its progestogen which causes the shedding of your womb lining. Medroxyprogesterone keeps your progesterone levels up and therefore delays your period.
Pharmacies frequently split boxes of Medroxyprogesterone, which are available in 10 or 90 tablet sizes.
This treatment is not used as a contraceptive and we don’t advise it for patients who are on a combined-oral contraceptive already, it may also interfere with existing forms of hormonal contraception. If you are taking hormonal contraceptives or hormone-based treatments, please consult with your GP for advice and support regarding period delay.
The Family Chemist only supplies a maximum of 60 tablets to delay your period for up to 17 days. If you need to delay your period for longer than 17 days or use it more than once in 3 months then please consult your GP.
How do I use Medroxyprogesterone?
Take one tablet three times a day, to be started three days before your expected period. It should be taken for no longer than 17 days. Once you stop taking this treatment your period should occur within 2 to 3 days and your cycles should continue as usual after this.
What are the common side effects?
You may not experience any side effect at all however the most common side effects reported include nausea (feeling sick), headache, unexpected or unusual vaginal bleeding or spotting with prolonged use.

Medroxyprogesterone is commonly prescribed to manage hormonal imbalances, regulate menstrual cycles, and treat conditions like abnormal uterine bleeding.
