What is Provera?
Provera is a brand name with a active ingredient called medroxyprogesterone. Medroxyprogesterone is a synthetic progestogen which can safely allow you to delay your period for up to 17 days. During your period your body has a natural fall in its norethisterone which causes the shedding of your womb lining. Norethisterone keeps your progesterone levels up and therefore delays your period.
Pharmacies frequently split boxes of Provera, which are available in 10 or 90 tablet sizes.
We do not work as a contraceptive nor supply Provera to patients who use other contraceptives or female hormones. Please consult your GP if you would like to delay your period whilst on contraceptives.
The Family Chemist only supplies a maximum of 60 tablets to delay your period for up to 17 days. If you need to delay your period for longer than 17 days or use it more than once in 3 months then please consult your GP.
How do I use Provera?
Take 1 tablet 3 times a day, to be started 3 days before your expected period. It should be taken for no longer than 17 days. Once you stop taking Provera your period should occur within 2 to 3 days and your cycles should continue as usual after this.
What are the common side effects?
You may not experience any side effect at all however the most common side effects reported include nausea (feeling sick), headache, unexpected or unusual vaginal bleeding or spotting with prolonged use.
