Provera is prescribed by The Family Chemist Clinician as “off-license”. This means it is not licensed in the UK for delaying your period. However Provera is used regularly as an alternative treatment for period delay in the UK when norethisterone doesn’t suit you. We recommend you try norethisterone first before trying Provera.

Provera is a brand name with a active ingredient called medroxyprogesterone. Medroxyprogesterone is a synthetic progestogen which can safely allow you to delay your period for up to 17 days. During your period your body has a natural fall in its norethisterone which causes the shedding of your womb lining. Norethisterone keeps your progesterone levels up and therefore delays your period.
Provera comes in box sizes of 10 or 90 tablets. These may be split into blank boxes which is common practice in pharmacies.
We do not work as a contraceptive nor supply provera to patients who use other contraceptives or female hormones. Please consult your GP if you would like to delay your period whilst on contraceptives.
The Family Chemist only supplies a maximum of 60 tablets to delay your period for up to 17 days. If you need to delay your period for longer than 17 days or use it more than once in 3 months then please consult your GP.
