Is Kamagra legal in the UK? The risks, and what to take instead

What is Kamagra?

Kamagra is sold as a medication to improve sex drive (libido) and to treat erectile dysfunction (ED), it claims to contain sildenafil citrate, the same active ingredient found in Viagra. It’s sold online without a prescription at a low price, which is the appeal. 

The UK’s medicines regulator, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), has never assessed it and neither has the European Medicines Agency. So nobody official has confirmed what’s in it, how strong it is, or how it was made. This is why it is illegal to buy or sell Kamagra in the UK. 

You’ll find Kamagra sold as tablets, as flavoured “oral jelly” sachets marketed as faster and easier to take, and as effervescent tablets you dissolve in water. There’s also “Super Kamagra”, which claims to add dapoxetine for premature ejaculation on top of the sildenafil.

None of these has been through UK safety checks, and the format doesn’t change that — a jelly is no safer than a tablet if nobody has verified what’s inside it. 

How is it supposed to work? 

Sildenafil belongs to a group of drugs called PDE5 inhibitors. When you’re aroused, your body releases nitric oxide, blood vessels in the penis relax, and blood flows in to produce an erection. An enzyme called PDE5 normally winds that process back down.

Sildenafil blocks it, so things stay relaxed for longer and an erection is easier to get and keep — though you still need to be sexually aroused for it to do anything. 

Licensed sildenafil does this dependably because every batch is tested. Kamagra is unlicensed so it can be a serious health risk. Without verified testing, there’s no way you can be sure of the dose, quality of the product, or ingredients – which could harm your health. 

Is Kamagra legal in the UK?

No. It’s unlicensed and unapproved by the MHRA; which means it is illegal to buy or sell it in the UK. Sildenafil is a prescription-only medicine, which means you can only get it legally once a qualified prescriber has decided if it’s safe for you. 

Some strengths may also be available through a pharmacy and after a discussion with the pharmacist. 

Selling unlicensed or prescription-only medicines to the public is a criminal offence, and the MHRA takes it seriously.

Working with Border Force, its Criminal Enforcement Unit seized around 19.5 million doses of illegally traded ED medicines between 2021 and 2025 — 4.4 million in 2025 alone — and shut down more than 1,500 websites and social media accounts selling them that year. 

Is Kamagra dangerous?

Yes. Unlicensed ED products have been found to contain no active ingredient at all, the wrong dose, other prescription drugs entirely, or contaminants that should not be in a medicine.

You can’t spot a fake by looking because many are packaged to look like the real thing. 

Most Kamagra is labelled at 100mg, the maximum daily amount of sildenafil, with no clinician anywhere in the process deciding that’s right for you.

Too much sildenafil can send your blood pressure crashing, and an unregulated batch might hold far more or far less than the box says. 

Sildenafil doesn’t mix with nitrate medicines used for heart conditions, and it needs care if you have heart disease, low blood pressure or a history of stroke.

Tadalafil (Cialis)

Lasts up to 36 hours so time is less of a factor and is also available in a low daily dose. 

Vardenafil (Levitra) and Spedra (Avanafil) are two other options that work similarly. 

Can you treat ED without pills?

Sometimes yes, depending on what’s causing it. Since ED usually comes down to physical or psychological factors, so it’s worth tackling those directly: 

• Stopping smoking 

• Drinking less alcohol 

• Regular exercise 

• Losing weight 

All of the above help to improve blood flow which can help remedy ED. Getting on top of conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes with your GP makes a difference too. ED can also be driven by stress, anxiety, low mood or relationship strain, where counselling or therapy can help.
