Frequently asked questions
Diprosalic ointment is used to treat skin conditions where the outer surface of the skin is covered by a layer of scales. Your ointment will remove the layer of scales and reduce the redness and itchiness caused by your skin problem. Diprosalic contains betamethasone dipropionate, a corticosteroid equivalent to 0.05% betamethasone. It also contains 3% salicylic acid. Betamethasone belongs to a group of medicines called corticosteroids that help reduce redness, swelling and inflammation. Corticosteroids come in various potencies, and selection depends on the severity, type and previous treatments used. Betamethasone is a potent and fast-acting corticosteroid.
Diprosalic is active topically, and produces a rapid and sustained response in dry, red and sore skin. It is also effective in less responsive conditions, such as psoriasis of the scalp and chronic plaque psoriasis of the hands and feet, but not in widespread plaque psoriasis. Topical salicylic acid softens keratin, loosens, and breaks down scaley skin allowing more rapid access to the lower inflamed part of the skin (dermis) than when applying steroid alone.
Diprosalic ointment should be used once to twice daily. In most cases a thin film should be applied to cover the affected area twice daily. For some patients, adequate maintenance therapy may be achieved with less frequent application.
It is recommended that Diprosalic preparations are prescribed for two weeks, and that treatment is reviewed at that time. The maximum weekly dose should not exceed 60 g.
Prepare the Affected Area: Before applying Diprosalic Ointment, gently clean the affected skin area.
Apply a Thin Layer: Use your fingers to apply a thin layer of Diprosalic Ointment. The key is to gently rub it into the skin area that needs treatment. Remember, a little goes a long way!
Twice Daily Routine: For optimal effectiveness, apply the ointment twice a day. Consistency is key in skin treatment.
Important Usage Instructions
Face Application Caution: If you’re using the ointment on your face, limit its use to no more than 5 days. The facial skin is delicate and needs extra care.
Moderation in Quantity and Duration: Avoid using large amounts of Diprosalic Ointment over extensive body areas for prolonged periods. This is crucial for avoiding potential side effects associated with overuse.
Avoid Sensitive Areas: Be careful not to get the ointment in your eyes, nose, or mouth. In case of accidental contact, rinse thoroughly with water.
DiproSalic Ointment is commonly used to treat skin conditions that involve inflammation and thickened, scaly skin, such as psoriasis and eczema. It is particularly effective for areas with hard, rough skin.
Apply a thin layer of the ointment to the affected area once or twice daily, as directed by our pharmacist. It’s important not to use it on large areas of the body or for prolonged periods without medical advice, as this can increase the risk of side effects.
When using Diprosalic Ointment, it’s important to be aware of its potential side effects, although it’s worth noting that not everyone will experience them. When applied as directed, most people find Diprosalic Ointment to be safe and effective. However, misuse or overuse can lead to certain side effects.
- Skin Changes: You may notice thinning of the skin, along with stinging, blistering, peeling, swelling, itching, burning, or a skin rash. Dryness and red marks are also possible. These effects are more likely in infants and children due to their sensitive skin.
- Hair and Pigmentation Changes: The ointment can cause inflammation of the hair follicles, excessive hair growth, reduced skin pigmentation, and allergic skin reactions.
- Dermatitis: This is a type of skin inflammation often triggered by external agents like detergents. Symptoms include red, itchy skin.
- Blurred Vision: This is a less common side effect but should be taken seriously if it occurs.
- Steroid Withdrawal Reaction: If Diprosalic Ointment is used continuously for long periods, stopping its use suddenly may lead to withdrawal symptoms. These can include redness of the skin (which may spread beyond the treated area), burning or stinging sensation, intense itching, peeling of the skin, and the appearance of oozing open sores.
Remember, Diprosalic Ointment is a potent medication, and its safe use is crucial. Always follow the prescribed guidelines and consult with healthcare professionals at The Family Chemist if you have any concerns or experience any adverse effects.
Diprosalic ointment should be used with caution on sensitive areas, such as the face, due to the potent nature of the corticosteroid. Use on the face should be limited, and our pharmacist should closely monitor it to avoid skin thinning or other adverse effects.
Cocois Ointment, while effective for certain conditions, may not be suitable for everyone. Here’s what you need to know:
Allergy Alert: Avoid Cocois Ointment if you’re allergic to betamethasone dipropionate, salicylic acid, or any other ingredient listed in the product. Allergic reactions can be serious.
Specific Skin Conditions: If you’re dealing with rosacea, acne, dermatitis around the mouth, genital itching, nappy rash, cold sores, chickenpox, or similar skin issues, Cocois Ointment may aggravate these conditions.
Psoriasis Patients: For those managing psoriasis, consistent monitoring of treatment is crucial. Any worsening of psoriasis or appearance of pus-filled bumps needs immediate attention from The Family Chemist clinician.
Visual Disturbances: Experiencing blurred vision or other visual changes? Contact The Family Chemist clinician right away.
Usage Guidelines: Avoid using Cocois Ointment under bandages or plasters. Overuse or prolonged use can disrupt hormone levels, particularly in infants and children. Adults should be cautious as well, as hormone changes can cause symptoms like facial puffiness, weakness, or dizziness.
Fire Hazard Warning: Be aware of the increased risk of severe burns. Clothing or bedding in contact with Cocois Ointment can catch fire easily. While washing can reduce the product build-up, it doesn’t completely eliminate the risk.
Monitoring Your Condition: If your condition worsens while using Cocois Ointment, it could indicate an allergic reaction, an infection, or the need for a different treatment. Contact The Family Chemist clinician for guidance.
Recurring Conditions: Should your condition return shortly after stopping the treatment (within 2 weeks), consult The Family Chemist clinician before restarting the ointment. If there’s extended redness or a burning sensation, seek medical advice immediately.
