Mounjaro – The Dreaded 5th Dose

What is the 5th dose?

This mythical fifth dose refers to the remaining liquid in the Mounjaro pen once the prescribed four doses have been used. Although it may seem tempting, this extra liquid is not measured or safe to use, and could result in receiving too much or too little of the medication. Too little medication can result in a disruption and inconsistency to your weight loss treatment, while an overdose could cause increased side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain. The Mounjaro weight loss journey is designed to increase gradually, dictated by the pen’s dosage which should not be altered.

Potential Side Effects of the 5th dose
  • Low Blood Sugar
  • Increased Nausea
  • Increased Diarrhoea
  • Higher chance of Vomiting
  • Higher chance of Stomach pain
  • Increased Constipation

What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is a weight loss injection containing tirzepatide, is designed to mimic the GLP-1 and GIP hormones naturally released by the body after eating. This hormone signals to the body that it is full and helps suppress appetite. When combined with healthy eating habits and lifestyle changes, Mounjaro weight loss injections can show results of up to 22% loss of starting weight after just one year.

Why is there liquid left in the pen?

After completing all four doses, you may notice a small amount of liquid left in the pen. This is a ‘buffer’ designed to ensure that enough medication is available for all four doses, after the priming stage.  Priming is crucial when administering each dose of Mounjaro and should not be skipped. Although priming uses a small amount of liquid, the pen allows for up to eight primes during its total use. The additional liquid ensures that the prescribed dose of medication is readily available and not wasted in prep.

What should I do with the leftover liquid?

Once the pen has been used for all four doses, the pen should be disposed of properly, not just thrown into your household waste. If there is any remaining liquid in the pen, take it to a pharmacy or doctors surgery for disposal with other pharmaceutical waste.

The Bottom Line

While that extra liquid leftover may seem like an ‘extra opportunity’, it should never be used. Unmeasured, and unsafe, this extra dose can lead to dangerous side effects. Stick to the prescribed doses and dispose of the pen safely when you’re finished.
