Sildenafil is the generic version of the well-known medication Viagra. It contains the same active ingredient, sildenafil, and is available in different strengths and pack sizes to help treat erectile dysfunction.

Studies have found sildenafil to be an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction. In clinical studies, improved erections were reported by 62% of men taking 25mg, 74% taking 50mg and 82% taking 100mg of sildenafil.

If you do not notice an effect straight away, your clinician may advise trying it on several separate occasions before considering a different dose or another erectile dysfunction treatment.
How does Sildenafil work?
Sildenafil belongs to a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (PDE-5 inhibitors). These medicines help increase blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation.
Sildenafil works by relaxing blood vessels in the penis, allowing them to widen and improve blood flow. This helps you achieve and maintain an erection when sexually aroused.

Who can use Sildenafil?
Most men over the age of 18 can take sildenafil if they are experiencing erectile dysfunction.
When completing a consultation, it’s important to provide your full medical history so our clinicians can check that sildenafil is safe and suitable for you.
How do I take Sildenafil?
The recommended starting dose is 50mg, taken approximately one hour before sexual activity. Depending on how well it works and whether you experience side effects, your prescriber may reduce the dose to 25mg or increase it to 100mg. The maximum recommended dose is 100mg.
Take no more than one dose of sildenafil in 24 hours, regardless of the strength.
Only take sildenafil when needed and follow the dose advised by your prescriber.
What are the common side effects of Sildenafil, and how can I manage them?
The most common side effects of sildenafil include:
- Headaches
- Flushing
- Indigestion
- Nasal congestion
- Dizziness
- Muscle pain
Stop taking sildenafil and seek medical advice if you experience:
- Sudden changes in vision, including blurred vision or sudden vision loss
- A sudden decrease or loss of hearing
- A prolonged or painful erection
- Symptoms of very low blood pressure, such as severe dizziness or fainting

Who should not use Sildenafil?
People who have experienced a stroke or have severe heart disease may not be suitable for sildenafil. Sildenafil can also interact with certain medicines, so it is important to provide your full medical history and current medication during your consultation.
Do not take Sildenafil if:
- You have had a stroke
- You have severe heart disease
- You are allergic to sildenafil or any of the other ingredients in this medicine
- You are taking medicines called nitrates, as the combination may cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure
- You are using nitric oxide donors, such as amyl nitrite (“poppers”), as the combination may cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure
- You are taking riociguat, as sildenafil can increase its blood-pressure-lowering effects
- You have a severe heart or liver problem
- You have low blood pressure
- You have certain rare inherited eye diseases, such as retinitis pigmentosa
- You have previously experienced loss of vision due to non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION)
Talk to a The Family Chemist clinician or your doctor if:
- You have sickle cell anaemia, leukaemia or multiple myeloma
- You have a deformity of the penis or Peyronie’s disease
- You have heart problems. Your doctor may need to check whether sexual activity is safe for you
- You currently have a stomach ulcer or a bleeding disorder, such as haemophilia
- You experience a sudden decrease or loss of vision. Stop taking sildenafil and contact your doctor immediately

How long do the effects of Sildenafil last?
Sildenafil’s effects can last up to 4 to 6 hours, this depends on the dosage and your body’s metabolism.
Food can dampen the effects of sildenafil. This is backed by a study highlighting this impact. Sildenafil concentrations peak much higher when taken on an empty stomach than in patients who have eaten.
How long does it take for Sildenafil to work?
Take 1 Sildenafil tablet an hour before you have sex, ideally on an empty stomach so that it can be fully absorbed into the bloodstream. Some foods, particularly fatty foods can make it harder to enter the system and work quickly.
Can you drink alcohol with Sildenafil?
Having one drink like a glass of wine or one beer is unlikely to have an effect or delay the effect of Sildenafil. However more than this can make it more difficult to get an erection, to get the best results we advise not drinking too much alcohol.
Can I drink grapefruit juice with Sildenafil?
Grapefruit and grapefruit juice should be avoided while taking sildenafil. Grapefruit can interfere with how the body breaks down sildenafil, which may increase the amount of the medicine in your bloodstream and raise the risk of side effects.
Can I take Sildenafil every day?
Sildenafil can be taken daily if needed, if you never take more than one tablet, regardless of strength in a 24 hour period, and you do not exceed your prescribed dose. It’s not a daily medication in the way some other ED treatments are, it’s taken on an as-needed basis.
Can I take Sildenafil with other ED treatments?
No. Sildenafil should never be combined with other erectile dysfunction treatments, whether tablets, sprays or topical treatments. Taking more than one ED treatment at the same time significantly increases the risk of side effects such as a dangerous fall in blood pressure, fainting, and long-lasting, painful erections that can cause permanent damage to the penis. Leave at least 24 hours between switching from one ED treatment to another, unless your prescriber has advised otherwise.
