Does Mounjaro Cause Hair Loss?

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a medication that’s become increasingly popular for weight loss and weight management. Working by mimicking two hormones (GLP-1 and GIP) that help regulate blood sugar levels, slow digestion, and reduce appetite. Many people have seen impressive results with Mounjaro weight loss injections, but as the number on the scales drops, some have noticed unexpected changes like hair thinning or shedding. But is Mounjaro be the cause?

Is Hair Loss a Known Side Effect of Mounjaro?

Hair loss is listed as a common side effect of Mounjaro in information leaflets. And, in a recent study hair loss occurred in 4.9% to 5.7% of patients using Mounjaro, compared to 0.9% of those using a placebo. This may not be due to the medication, though, but instead a side effect from the fast weight loss, which can be a trigger for hair shedding.

Why Does Weight Loss Sometimes Cause Hair Loss?

When the body undergoes a metabolic body stress, hormonal change, or rapid weight loss (as is intended when using Mounjaro), the body can enter a stress state called telogen effluvium. This condition disrupts the natural cycle for hair growth leading to shedding. Where the hair usually goes through growth, transformation, and then rest (shedding), during telogen effluvium state, the body sends more hair into this final resting stage causing increased hair loss. Where average hair loss could see people loose 100 hairs a day naturally, during telogen effluvium people are more likely to notice loss of 300 hairs in a day. This tends to begin after 2-3 months of your rapid weight loss.

How Long Does Hair Loss Last?

While hair loss can be concerning, shedding caused by weight loss is usually temporary and reversible. As the body adapts to the weight loss, hair growth typically returns to normal. Most people experiencing hair loss will see regrowth within six to twelve months once treatment has stabilised.

The Bottom Line

Mounjaro is not directly known to cause hair loss but rather the rapid weight loss. The good news? This type of hair loss is usually temporary, and with the right support, your hair should recover over time.
