Weight Loss FAQs

Orlistat (Xenical) come in an easy to swallow capsule form and are available for patients with a BMI > 28. The treatment can help you lose 50% more weight than dieting alone. So, for every 2lb you lose through your own efforts of healthy eating and exercise, Orlistat can help you lose 1lb more.

OR

Subcutaneous injections such as Mounjaro, Nevolat, and Wegovy® are for adults with obesity (BMI ≥30) or overweight (excess weight) (BMI ≥27) who also have weight-related medical problems to help them lose weight and keep it off. Weight loss injection should be used with a reduced-calorie meal plan and increased physical activity.

Orlistat (drug name/generic) also known as Xenical (Brand) attaches itself to some of the body’s natural enzymes that break down fat. The fat is prevented from, being digested and absorbed; meaning any extra calories you have eaten will not be stored and added to your weight.

Mounjaro, Nevolat, and Wegovy works by acting on receptors in the brain that control your appetite, causing you to feel fuller and less hungry. This may help you eat less food and reduce your body weight. GLP-1s have many other benefits including but not limited to decrease in blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol.

The medication isn’t the magic bullet. You will need to commit to a healthy lifestyle and diet but by placing measurable objectives you can hit the desired weight you are happy with.
Make sure you read the patient information leaflet carefully as there may be hints and tips on how to use your medication correctly or feel free to call us for some advice. However, there can be occasions where the treatments don’t work or suit you. In this case we recommend you contact your GP at your earliest opportunity for further advice.

All weight loss medication will require you to combine treatment with healthy eating habits. All medication can help manage appetite or how your body handles food, but it’s still important to make thoughtful choices about what and how you eat. A balanced diet supports the medication’s effect and helps you build long-term habits. You should be aiming for a calorie deficit for effective results; calorie output should outweigh calorie intake.

For Orlistat specifically, a healthy diet will focus on low-fat, and low fried foods because Orlistat blocks fat absorption and will not be digested.

Weight loss medications are most effective when paired with lifestyle changes. This includes not just how you eat, but also how active you are, and how well you sleep. These medications are an aid and not a solution on it’s own. Lasting and effective weight loss requires a consistent and healthy routine alongside it. Adults should aim to do some physical activity every day. Even a brisk walk counts towards your physical activity for the day.

Weight loss injections, such as those containing tirzepatide, liraglutide or semaglutide, work by mimicking a hormone that targets areas of the brain involved in appetite regulation. They help reduce hunger and calorie intake, leading to weight loss. These injections are typically used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Weight loss injections are generally prescribed for individuals with obesity (BMI of 30 or more) or overweight (BMI of 27 or more) with weight-related health conditions like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. A healthcare provider can assess eligibility based on individual health needs and history.

Weight loss injections have shown effectiveness in long-term weight management when combined with lifestyle modifications. They typically result in more significant and sustained weight loss compared to diet and exercise alone. Continuous use under medical supervision is often necessary for maintaining weight loss.
