Pepto Bismol is a digestive relief medication used to help soothe common stomach discomforts such as nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, and diarrhoea. It contains bismuth subsalicylate, which helps coat and protect the stomach lining, and the lower part of your food pipe to relieve irritation. It also helps reduce the frequency of diarrhoea, travellers’ diarrhoea, and soothe most digestive discomfort. 

Active Ingredient

Bismuth subsalicylate 262mg

Other Ingredients

Sodium, aspartame (E951), and amaranth (E123).

Adults and children 16 years and over:

  • Chew or dissolve two tablets in the mouth.
  • Repeat dose every 30-60 minutes if needed. 

Do not take more than 16 tablets (eight doses) in a 24hr period. Do not take for more than 2 days. For oral use only.

Precautions

  • Not suitable for children under 16 years old. 
  • Do not take if you have an allergy to any ingredients in Pepto Bismol.
  • Not suitable for use in pregnancy or whilst breastfeeding.
  • Consult a GP or pharmacist before use if you suffer from diabetes, gout, or a blood clotting disorder.
  • For short-term relief only. Do not take for longer than 2 days.

 

Storage

  • Store below 25°C.
  • Store in a cool dry place away from direct heat and sunlight.
  • Keep out of sight and reach of children.

Common side effects may include:

  • Harmless darkening of the tongue  
  • Harmless darkening of stools 

Uncommon side effects may include:

  • Worsening stomach pains
  • Feeling confused, tired, or dizzy. Usually only present if recommended dose is exceeded.
  • Ringing or buzzing in the ears.
  • Allergic reaction such as swelling or sudden rash. In the case of an allergic reaction, stop using and keep medical attention.
