Frequently asked questions
Dymista is a prescription-only nasal spray which contains two active medicines. This dual-action nasal spray is popular with patients and prescribers, as it contains an intranasal antihistamine called Azelastine and a corticosteroid called fluticasone propionate. The antihistamine works by preventing the effect of histamine, reducing the allergic reaction to pollen and the steroid works by reducing inflammation.
Dymista is recommended for patients who fail to succeed with an intranasal antihistamine or corticosteroid alone. It can be used to treat seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. Substances such as pollen, house mites, moulds, dusts or pets.
Dymista is manufactured by Mulan and contains 120 metered sprays. One spray (0.14 g) delivers 137 micrograms azelastine hydrochloride (= 125 micrograms azelastine) and 50 micrograms fluticasone propionate.
Dymista nasal spray needs to be used regularly for it to work. It takes a few days for Dymista nasal spray to work, so starting at least a week before the nasal symptoms begin is sensible. The usual starting dose is one sprays into each nostril in the morning and evening. Do not use larger doses or more than the maximum recommended dose. You must use your nasal spray correctly. Otherwise, you may notice that it is not as effective.
- Shake your bottle gently for 5 seconds and then remove the protective cap.
- The first time the nasal spray is used, you must prime the pump by squirting it into the air.
- Prime the pump by putting two fingers on either side of the spray pump and place your thumb on the bottom of the bottle.
- Press down and release the pump 6 times until a fine mist appears.
- Now your pump is primed and ready to use.
- If the nasal spray has not been used for more than seven days, you must re-prime the pump once by pressing down and releasing the pump.
- Shake the bottle gently for 5 seconds by tilting it upwards and downwards and then remove the protective cap.
- Blow your nose to clear your nostrils.
- Keep your head tilted downwards towards your toes. Do not tilt head backwards.
- Hold the bottle upright and carefully insert the spray tip into one nostril.
- Close other nostril with your finger, rapidly press down once and sniff gently at the same time.
- Breathe out through your mouth.
- Repeat in your other nostril.
- Breathe in gently, and do not tilt your head back after dosing. This will stop the medicine from going into your throat and causing an unpleasant taste.
- After each use wipe the spray tip with a clean tissue or cloth and then replace the protective cap.
- Do not prick the nozzle in case spray is not obtained. Clean the actuator with water.
Dymista nasal spray can cause side effects like all medicines, although not everyone gets them. The most common side effects are sneezing, dry or sore throat, hoarse voice, unpleasant taste or smell or sore nose or nosebleeds.
The full list of side effects is available in the patient information leaflet.
