Nevolat Injections

Nevolat is a prescription-only medication that works by mimicking the action of the GLP-1 hormone that targets areas of the brain involved in appetite regulation. It contains the active ingredient liraglutide, which was also found in the brand Saxenda (now discontinued). By administering a once-daily injection under the skin, Nevolat helps in significantly reducing hunger and makes patients feel more satisfied, leading to a reduced food intake and weight loss.

Nevolat, a generic version of liraglutide, it is a prescription-only weight loss injection licensed by the MHRA in March 2024 for weight loss. It can be prescribed to those with a BMI over 30 kg/ m² (obesity) or those with a BMI of 27 kg/ m² with a weight-related health condition.

You will notice reduced appetite and feeling fuller quicker when eating food. Studies show patients can lose at least 5% of their initial body weight within just 12 weeks of starting treatment, following the gradual dose increase. GLP-1s, including Nevolat, have many other benefits including, but not limited to, decrease in blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol levels by helping you lose weight in a steady and healthy way.

The starting dose of Nevolat injections is 0.6mg. You can then gradually increase in 0.6mg steps each week to reach a maximum of 3mg (by week 5) daily. This gradual increase allows your body to adjust to the medication and ensures your safety. All doses are administered using the same pen so you may need multiple pens for a one month supply.

You should never inject more than advised and follow the stepwise instructions. If you experience side effects, or cannot tolerate the dose increase then stay on the same dose for a further 2-week period to allow your body to adjust. If side effects continue, get in touch with our clinicians or your doctor.

Nevolat is a daily injection, we advise injecting at the same time each day to establish a routine. You will always start from the lowest dose of 0.6mg and gradually increase weekly to the maximum of 3mg.

When using a Nevolat pen, always check the following:

1. Prepare: Store your new pens in the fridge. Before injecting always check the pen label to confirm it is the correct medication and inspect whether the liquid in the pen is clear and check the expiry date. Wash your hands and attach a new disposable needle to the pen by pushing it straight onto the pen and twisting right.
2. Check the flow: Follow the directions from the information leaflet to check the flow and prime the pen. You should see a drop of solution appear on the tip of the needle. If this doesn’t happen, you can repeat the process up to six times. If no solution appears, you may need to attach a new needle or get in touch with us.
3. Select your dose: Select the correct dose by turning the dose selector at the end of the pen. Take care to ensure you select the correct dose.
4. Inject your dose: Your dose can be injected under the skin, in the upper arm, thighs or abdomen, hold the needle in and count slowly to 6 before removing it after the dial has reached 0. Do not inject into a muscle or vein. We would advise rotating the injection site to avoid inflammation and irritation.
5. Dispose: Cover the needle with the cap and dispose of it in a sharps container. Do not store the pen with the needle attached.

Depending on the dose you’re on, your pen may last different periods. As a general guide:

• 0.6mg daily dose – one pen will last 30 days
• 1.2mg daily dose – one pen will last 15 days
• 1.8mg daily dose – one pen will last 10 days
• 2.4mg daily dose – one pen will last 7.5 days
• 3.0mg daily dose – one pen will last 6 days

Please note that this is based on staying on the same dose, when you first start your treatment, you will need to follow the stepwise dose increase and your pen will likely last less than the number of days shown.

Whilst Nevolat is a fully licensed treatment option, it may not be suitable for everyone.

• Allergies: If you’re sensitive or allergic to Nevolat or any of its ingredients, you should avoid using it.
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Nevolat, and all GLP-1s are not safe in pregnancy or breastfeeding. You should use effective contraception during treatment and avoid conceiving whilst on Nevolat. Its effects on the unborn baby are unknown and we therefore advise that you stop treatment immediately if you find out you are pregnant.
• Type 1 Diabetes or Diabetic Retinopathy: Nevolat is not an insulin substitute but may impact glucose control, this can negatively affect diabetes control and worsen eye symptoms.
• History of Thyroid Cancer: If you have a personal, or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, you should avoid using Nevolat. Trials suggested it may increase risk of developing thyroid tumors.
• Those under 18 or over 75 years of age.
• Those suffering from liver or kidney disease, severe stomach or gut problems (including gastroparesis) or severe inflammatory bowel disease.

Like all medications, Nevolat can cause side effects. While not everyone experiences them, common side effects may include:

Very Common (may affect more than 1 in 10 people):

• • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Headache

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

• Stomach discomfort, indigestion, inflammation, heartburn, bloating, wind, stomach pain, belching, dry mouth
• Weakness or tiredness
• Changes in taste
• Dizziness
• Difficulty sleeping
• Gallstones
• Injection site reactions (bruising, irritation, itching, and rash)
• Low blood sugar

The list above does not include all possible side effects, therefore it is vital that if you experience any serious side effects whilst using this medication to consult a healthcare professional and if you experience side effects not listed above, complete a MHRA Yellow Card report.

Be sure to read through the patient information leaflet before taking any new medication to familiarise yourself with the possible side effects, cautions, and contraindications. If you experience side effects, there are ways to help ease them, depending on their severity. If any side effect is severe and persistent, please contact our clinicians for support.

For some quick tips:

• Dehydration: Stay hydrated with clear fluids – we recommend 2-3L of water per day.
• Gastrointestinal (e.g. indigestion, nausea and vomiting, bloating): Eat smaller but more frequent meals. Avoid heavily fried or fatty food and eat plain foods such as toast, rice and crackers. Caffeinated, carbonated or alcoholic drinks may worsen these side effects.
• Constipation: Stay hydrated, increase your fiber intake and try to exercise regularly. If these measures don’t help, get in touch with your doctor or our clinicians for advice.

If you miss a dose of Nevolat, follow these guidelines:

• If you remember within 12 hours of your scheduled dose, inject as soon as you remember and continue with your usual schedule the next day.
• If you remember after 12 hours, resume the following day at your scheduled time.
• Never double-dose.

There are a range of alternative medications to Nevolat that are licensed for use in the UK. These include weight loss injections, and weight loss tablets, which are available through The Family Chemist. All treatment options are provided alongside dietary and lifestyle changes.

Nevolat, Mounjaro and Wegovy all work in a similar way by mimicking GLP hormones. However, they differ in active ingredients, effectiveness, and method of administration.

• Keep Nevolat out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pen and box. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month
• Store unopened pens in the fridge (2°C to 8°C). Do not freeze.
• Once in use, you can store the pen in a fridge or at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to 30 days.
• Discard pens 30 days after opening
• Always store the pen with the cap on, and dispose of used needles appropriately.
• Do not discard medication in household waste. Ask your local pharmacy or doctor’s surgery to dispose of any pharmaceutical waste.

No. It can be dangerous to take multiple weight loss medications at the same time. We cannot provide Nevolat if you are already on other treatments. You can switch between treatments, but you must first consult your doctor and may be advised to have a sufficient treatment gap for your safety.

Nevolat does not come with needles, a sharps bin or alcohol swabs, but these are needed when administering each dose. These can all be purchased separately from ourselves or any community pharmacy, or opt for our bundle that includes everything you will need for your injections.
