Vitaros (Alprostadil) FAQs
How does Vitaros cream work?
The active ingredient in Vitaros is alprostadil, which dilates blood vessels and increases blood flow to the penis, leading to quick and effective erections. To use the cream, you apply it directly to the tip of the penis, where it is absorbed into the skin around the urethra and acts locally at the site. Apply the cream 5-30 minutes before sexual activity to enhance an erection for 1-2 hours. ED tablets, such as Sildenafil, work in a similar way to the ED cream.
How to use Vitaros?
To use the ED cream, apply it to the tip of the penis using a single-use Vitaros AccuDose container and discard it after use. The onset of effect occurs within 5 to 30 minutes after application, and the duration of the effect is approximately 1 to 2 hours, although this may vary depending on the patient. Before using the ED cream, prepare for sexual intercourse, as the cream is applied locally and has quick effects. We recommend using the ED cream no more than 2-3 times per week and only once within a 24-hour period. If you have regular sex, consider using daily ED tablets such as Cialis Daily or Tadalafil 2.5mg, 5mg tablets, which are taken once a day.
How effective is the erectile dysfunction cream, Vitaros?
In clinical trials, the ED cream statistically significantly improved erectile function and intercourse ability compared to the placebo. In fact, 52% of men, who used the ED cream, reported enhanced erections compared to 20% of men using a placebo cream
A post‑hoc analysis reported that close to 40% of men had a clinically significant increase in the international index of erectile function score, 36% had a clinically relevant improvement in penetration ability and 31% had a clinically relevant improvement in the ability to have successful intercourse.
Who should not use the erectile dysfunction cream, Vitaros?
Patients with any of the following conditions should not use Vitaros:
- Drop in blood pressure when going from a lying/sitting to a standing position, history of a heart attack, and syncope (dizziness)
