Announced last month by manufacturer Eli Lilly, the change has understandably caused concern and confusion for many patients, especially around affordability and continued access to treatment. 

With this in mind, you may have questions about how the price increase affects you, what your options are, and whether it’s time to explore alternatives or even pause treatment. Why is the Price Increasing?  

When Eli Lilly first launched Mounjaro, the goal was to create an effective treatment for both type 2 diabetes and obesity. To support early NHS access in the UK, the medication was initially priced significantly lower than in other countries. However, due to international pricing pressure (particularly from the United States), Eli Lilly is now adjusting prices to better align with global markets. This increase is intended to balance international and domestic cost.  

 

How Much is the Price Increasing?  

We understand that any price increase can make access to treatment more difficult, especially for long-term users. Eli Lilly had confirmed that the private UK price list for Mounjaro has risen by up to 170%. While the rise if slightly less steep for the lower doses, such as 2.5mg and 5mg, all strengths are affected by the new pricing.

If you’re buying Mounjaro privately, the price increase is unavoidable, and while we’ve done our best to offer the most competitive price possible, it will still mean higher monthly costs for patients.  

This sudden rise has understandably caused concern among long-term users who have experienced positive results with the medication. Some have reported feelings of frustration and anxiety, with many expressing concerns about being able to afford treatment going forward.  

To help make Mounjaro more accessible, we offer Clearpay, allowing you to spread the cost of your treatment into manageable instalments. 

What Options Are There Going Forward?  

Given the recent price increase, we understand that continuing Mounjaro may not be financially viable for everyone. If you’re seeing good results and can manage the cost, you may choose to continue with treatment. We have recently introduced a Clearpay option when paying, allowing you to split the cost of your treatment into more manageable instalments.  

However, for those seeking more affordable options, there are several effective alternatives. Wegovy (semaglutide) is a weekly injection with a similar mechanism of action to Mounjaro and is often more cost-effective post-increase. Nevolat (liraglutide), a daily injection, may suit patients who prefer a lower upfront cost are other suitable alternative for weight management. If you are wishing to switch, this is completely safe, we advise a two week break once finishing Mounjaro before starting a new treatment, and all patients, regardless of the strength of Mounjaro previously use must begin a new treatment on the lowest dose and titrate up to ensure patient safety.  

If you’re close to your target weight, you may want to focus on maintaining your progress through lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise, and healthy habits. Stopping Mounjaro is completely safe, with no known side effects from stopping abrupt although the appetite suppression from the medication will also stop.
