Pepto Bismol is a digestive relief medication used to help soothe common stomach discomforts such as nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, and diarrhoea. It contains bismuth subsalicylate, which helps protect the stomach lining and relieve irritation. It also helps reduce the frequency of diarrhoea and soothe digestive discomfort.
Active Ingredient
Bismuth subsalicylate 17.5mg/ml
Other Ingredients
Sodium, benzoic acid (E210), amaranth (E123).
Adults and children 16 years and over:
- Shake the bottle before use.
- Pour 30ml of product into the cup provided and swallow.
- Repeat dose every 30-60 minutes if needed.
Do not take more than eight doses in a 24hr period. Do not take for more than 2 days. For oral use only.
Precautions
- Not suitable for children under 16 years old.
- For short-term relief only. Do not take for longer than 2 days.
- Do not exceed the stated dose.
- Do not use if you are allergic to aspirin or other salicylates.
- If symptoms persist, worsen, or if diarrhoea lasts more than 48 hours, seek medical advice.
- Consult a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other medicines.
Storage
Store bottle between 15°C and 25°C.
Store in a cool dry place away from direct heat and sunlight.
Do not store in a fridge or freezer.
Ensure bottle is kept tightly closed.
Keep out of sight and reach of children.
Common side effects may include:
- Temporary darkening of the tongue
- Temporary darkening of stools may occur
- Mild constipation
Uncommon side effects may include:
- Allergic reactions such as rash, swelling or itching
- Ringing in the ears or hearing changes, particularly with high doses or prolonged use
- Worsening stomach pains
