Optrex Infected Eye Drops are medicated eye drops containing the antibiotic chloramphenicol, specifically formulated to treat acute bacterial conjunctivitis, a common bacterial eye infection that causes redness, irritation, swelling, and sticky discharge. They help eliminate the bacteria responsible for the infection and soothe discomfort.
Active Ingredient
Chloramphenicol 0.5%
Other Ingredients
Boric Acid, borax, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, phenyl ethyl alcohol, purified water.
Adults and children 2 years old and over:
- Wash your hands thoroughly before use.
- Tilt your head back and gently pull down the lower eyelid.
- Instil one or two drops into the affected eye(s) every 2hrs for the first two days.
- Then reduce to four times a day for remaining five days of treatment. (Treatment course should be seven days in total.)
- Close the eye for a few seconds and blink to spread the drops evenly.
- Do not touch the tip of the bottle to your eye or any surface to avoid contamination.
For topical use only in the eye.
Precautions
- Not suitable for use in children under 2 years old.
- Complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve.
- Do not use if you are allergic to chloramphenicol or any other ingredients in the drops.
- Stop use and seek medical advice if you experience eye pain, vision changes, swelling, or signs of an allergic reaction.
- If symptoms persist for more than 7 days, consult a healthcare professional.
- Consult with a healthcare professional before use if pregnant or breastfeeding.
Storage
Store in the fridge at 2°C to 8°C.
Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.
Once opened, use within 28 days and discard any remaining solution.
Keep out of sight and reach of children.
Common side effects can include:
- Mild stinging or burning when the drops are applied
- Temporary blurred vision
Uncommon side effects can include:
- Eye irritation or redness that persists
- Allergic reactions such as itching, swelling, or rash around the eyes
