Metronidazole 400mg

Metronidazole is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, including bacterial vaginosis (BV). For BV, it works by stopping the growth of the bacteria that cause the infection which then reduces the symptoms of BV; changes in discharge colour, odour, and consistency.

Typically you should take one tablet twice a day for seven days, though this dosage will be discussed with your healthcare provider. Occasionally, your dose may be given as a single five tablet dose in occasions where people may struggle with taking tablets or express a difficulty in maintaining treatment over a period of time. A seven day treatment is preferable due to reduced risk of side effects, and effectiveness of treatment.

You should always complete the full course of any antibiotic that have been prescribed, even if symptoms have improved. This is to ensure the treatment has worked fully and avoids risk of reoccurrence.

Metronidazole for BV is a treatment only suitable for adult women who have either suffered from BV in the past and recognise the symptoms, who have spoken to a healthcare professional for diagnosis of their BV, or who have taken a test which would indicate the presence of BV*. If this is the first time experiencing symptoms of BV without diagnosis or a self test, you may be refused this service.

This medication is not suitable for everyone, and it is important when completing our consultation forms to declare an accurate medical history in order to ensure patient safety when prescribing. You may be refused treatment if you:

• Are allergic to metronidazole (or any similar medications)
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding
• Have a history of liver problems
• Have a history of blood disorders (such as low white blood cell count)
• Have a nervous system disorder (such as epilesy or peripheral neuropathy)

Common side effects to this line of treatment may include nausea, a metallic taste in the mouth, headache, or mild stomach upset. These effect are usually mild and will settle once your treatment is finished.

Serious side effects, though rare, should be reported to a doctor immediately. These can include numbness, tingling or pain in hands or feet, seizures, unexplained fever, severe stomach pain, or persistent vomiting.
