Lactulose is a laxative medicine used to treat constipation. It is a synthetic sugar that is not absorbed into the bloodstream, which means it works mainly in the gut. Lactulose is available as a sweet-tasting liquid and is suitable for adults and children when used as directed.

Lactulose works by drawing water into the bowel, which softens stools and makes them easier to pass. It is broken down by bacteria in the large intestine, increasing the amount of water in the stool and gently stimulating bowel movements. Because it works gradually, it may take 24–48 hours to have an effect.
