FAQs

Dalacin Cream is a prescription antibiotic treatment that contains clindamycin. It is used inside the vagina to treat bacterial vaginosis (BV), a common infection caused by an overgrowth of bacteria. This cream helps restore the normal balance of vaginal bacteria and relieves symptoms such as a change in discharge or odour.

Dalacin is an antibiotic cream to be applied intravaginally (into the vagina) using one of the applicators provided. You should use one applicator‐full of the gel (about 5g) once daily at bedtime for seven nights.

Directions for use:

  1. Wash your hands before use.
  2. Screw the applicator onto the tube and fill it until the plunger stops.
  3. Lie on your back with knees bent (or whichever position is comfortable), insert applicator gently as far as comfortable, then depress the plunger to release gel.
  4. Dispose of the applicator after use. Use a fresh one each night.

Dalacin cream is only suitable for adult women who have either suffered from BV in the past and recognise the symptoms, who have spoken to a healthcare professional for diagnosis of their BV, or who have taken a test which would indicate the presence of BV*. If this is the first time experiencing symptoms of BV without diagnosis or a self test, you may be refused this service.

This medication is not suitable for everyone, and it is important when completing our consultation forms to declare an accurate medical history in order to ensure patient safety when prescribing. You may be refused treatment if you:

  • Are allergic to clindamycin or lincomycin
  • Have a history of severe side effects following antibiotic treatment
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have a history of inflammatory bowel disease

*This test could be an at-home self-testing kit measuring the vaginal pH level. Available through our self-testing page.

Common side effects to this line of treatment may include vaginal irritation (itchiness, burning), abnormal vaginal discharge, stomach discomfort or diarrhoea, or an increase risk of vaginal thrush. These effect are usually mild and temporary.

If you develop diarrhoea, you should stop treatment immediately.

Serious side effects, though rare, should be reported to a doctor immediately. These can include an allergic reaction, severe diarrhoea, or abdominal pain.

It is not advised to use Dalacin during your period, as menstrual bleeding can make the cream less effective.

Avoid sexual intercourse during treatment, since the cream can affect condoms and may reduce protection against pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.
