Eczema Steroids FAQ's

Topical steroid treatments work by reducing inflammation in the skin. When an eczema flare-up occurs, the immune system overreacts, causing redness, swelling, and itching. Corticosteroids calm this response, helping to soothe irritated skin, relieve discomfort, and support the skin’s natural healing process. By targeting the inflammation directly, they provide fast, effective relief for flare-ups.

Most people will notice improvement from their eczema flare-ups within just a few days of starting treatment. Redness and itching often decreases first, followed by reduced swelling and improved comfort.

Treatments should be used consistently throughout treatment in order to notice results, and should be used for up to four weeks for any flare-up.

Some areas of the body, such as face, neck, or genitals are more sensitive and treatment that we offer if not suitable for these areas.

Emollient moisturisers should be used regularly alongside steroid treatment to help maintain the skin barrier, reduce dryness, and improve effectiveness of treatment eczema and eczema maintenance. Apply emollients liberally and frequently, including when the skin appears clear. When using both treatments, allow a gap of around 20–30 minutes between steroid and emollient application to ensure proper absorption.

Emollients can be used on those who are not currently having a flare-up, and even those who don’t have eczema. Regular use of emollients can help to keep the skin protected, and avoid future flare-ups.
