Zolmitriptan Orodispersible

Zolmitriptan, as a 5-HT1 agonist, causes constriction of blood vessels around the brain. Consequently, this narrows the widened blood vessels associated with migraines.

This form of medication must be taken by placing the tablet under the tongue, where it will dissolve and be swallowed with saliva. You do not have to take a drink of water in order to swallow orodispersible tablets. 

The recommended dose of zolmitriptan to treat a migraine attack is 2.5 mg. If symptoms persist or return within 24 hours, a second dose may be taken, but this must be after 2hrs of the initial dose. Moreover, if 2.5 mg doses do not provide satisfactory relief, subsequent attacks can be treated with 5 mg doses of zolmitriptan. In those patients who respond to the medication, significant efficacy is observed within 1 hour of dosing. Therefore, it is important to remember that no more than two doses should be taken in any 24-hour period.

It’s important to note that while you may not experience any side effects, some people have reported feeling a warm or hot sensation, tightness, tingling, flushing, drowsiness, and pressure in areas like the face, arms, legs or chest. Additionally, it’s important to remember that the way side effects affect different people can vary depending on the type of medication taken.

Therefore, if one type of medication causes unpleasant side effects, switching to a different one may be a good option to explore. However, if you experience intense chest pain or sensations, it’s essential to seek medical attention immediately either by consulting a doctor or going straight to the nearest emergency department.
