Imigran Nasal Spray

Imigran contains Sumatriptan, an active ingredient that is available in the form of a nasal spray. Patients experiencing nausea and vomiting during a migraine attack or requiring quick relief can benefit from this medication. Sumatriptan is classified as a 5-HT1 agonist because it contracts the blood vessels surrounding the brain, reversing the widening of blood vessels that is believed to be a part of the migraine process.

The optimal dose is 20 mg for administration into one nostril. However, due to patient variability of both the migraine attacks and the absorption of sumatriptan, 10 mg may be effective in some patients. If you have responded to the first dose but the symptoms recur, a second dose may be taken in the following 24 hours, provided that there is a minimum interval of 2 hours between the two doses.

You may not experience any side effect at all however the most common side effects reported include a warm-hot sensation, tightness, tingling, flushing, drowsiness, and feelings of heaviness or pressure in areas such as the face, arms, legs and occasionally the chest. The way side-effects affect different people can vary between the different triptans. So, if one causes unpleasant side-effects, a switch to a different one may be fine.
