Eczema Emollients FAQ's

For the best results when using an emollient, you should apply it in the direction of hair growth to avoid blocking hair follicles.

Emollients can be used generously, smoothed into the skin, and can be applied as often as needed, especially after bathing or whenever your skin feels dry.

Absolutely not. Anyone can use emollients, including people who don’t have eczema or aren’t currently having a flare-up. Regular use helps keep the skin moisturised, protected, and less likely to become irritated, avoiding future flare-ups from occurring.

Emollients are generally considered safe for all ages, including babies (though they may benefit from a specialised formula). If you have  known skin condition or allergy, check the ingredient list before application.

Many emollients do contain paraffin-based ingredients, which help lock in moisture and protect the skin. These products are safe to use, but it’s important to follow safety guidance such as keeping away from open flames and heat sources, as paraffin is flammable. Keep fabric which has touched emollients away from flame; including clothing or bedding.

Some emollients include an ingredient called colloidal oatmeal, which can sooth dry, itchy skin. If you have a known oat or cereal allergy, it’s best to check the product label carefully and seek advice if you’re unsure.

Yes. Emollients can be used alongside other treatments such as topical steroid creams and ointments. It is advised to leave a short gap between applications (often 20-30 minutes). This is to avoid diluting their effect.
