Behind the Scenes – Dispensing Your NHS Prescription
Ever wondered what happens after your GP send your prescription to our pharmacy? Here’s an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at how we safely and carefully prepare your NHS medication from receiving through to dispatch.
Step ONE – Prescription Arrival at the Pharmacy and Clinical Checks
Once your GP sends your prescription electronically, we recieve it securely via the NHS system. A qualified pharmacist at our pharmacy then reviews each prescription for safety, accuracy, and clarity. At this point, we carefully check the dosage, instructions, potential drug interactions, availability of the medication, and or any other concerns based on your medication history (if known).
If anything appears unclear or out of the ordinary, we’ll immediately contact your GP to confirm details before moving forward.
Step TWO – Preparing your Medication
After approval, the dispensing process begins. Our pharmacy assistants, dispensers, and technicians carefully gather your medication, ensuring it exactly matches what was prescribed. We double-check the name, strength, dose, and form of the medication.
A team member enters the prescription details into our secure NHS system, which generates a label for your medication. This creates a record for both you and our team, ensuring that everything is accurate.
Each item is carefully double-checked, and the label containing your name, dosage instructions, and any additional guidance, is affixed. We also ensure that all necessary items, such as compliance aids (measuring spoons, oral syringes, etc.) are included to help you safely manage your condition.
Step THREE – Final Check
Before packing, a qualified specialist performs a final check to ensure everything is correct. This essential step helps prevent errors and ensures that your medication matches your prescription exactly.
Step FOUR – Packing and Dispatch
Your medication is securely packaged in discreet, plain packaging and handed over to our delivery courier, with a shipping label clearly attached. Our standard delivery service is free, and we strive to ensure that your medication arrives quickly and safely to the address you provide.
Once dispatched, you’ll receive regular updates tracking your medication’s journey. You’ll receive tracking updates, and if there are any delays or issues, we’ll notify you promptly.
What Can Cause Delays within the Pharmacy?
While we always aim to process and dispatch your prescription quickly, delays can occasionally occur due to factors beyond our control. These may include stock shortages, unclear prescription details, or waiting for approval from your GP. If you’re starting new medication or there have been recent changes, we might need clarification from you or your doctor. We’ll always keep you informed in case of delays and work hard to ensure that everything proceeds smoothly.
From start to finish, your prescription is handled by trained professionals at our pharmacy who are dedicated to getting it right. Your safety and satisfaction are our top priorities, and we take great care in ensuring that your medication is delivered safely and accurately.
