How It Works?
1. Sign up below
Start by filling out the short form at the bottom of this page. This tells the NHS you’d like us to be your nominated pharmacy. It only takes a minute.Â
2. Request your medication
Use the NHS App or contact your GP directly to request your usual prescriptions. Nothing changes on your GP’s end, they still approve everything as normal.
3. Your GP signs it off
Once your GP checks and approves your order, they send us your prescription electronically. No paperwork, no chasing.Â
4. Over to our pharmacy team
This is where the magic happens. Within 1 to 2 working days, our trained pharmacists check everything for accuracy and safety. Our checking process is no joke: our accuracy rate is 99.995%. Once it’s good to go, we package it up at our central pharmacy and get it ready for dispatch.
5. Delivery to Your DoorÂ
Your medication is sent out using Royal Mail Tracked services. Most orders arrive in 2 to 3 working days in discreet, letterbox-friendly packaging made from sustainable materials. You’ll get tracking updates along the way, so you’re never left wondering where your meds are.Â

NHS Prescription FAQs
Who can use The Family Chemist’s NHS prescription service?
Anyone registered with a GP in England can use our NHS prescription service. Whether you need regular repeat medication or a one-off prescription, we’ve got you covered. If you’d like free home delivery and an easy way to manage your medication online or via your phone, our service may be perfect for you.
We accept all valid NHS prescription exemptions and prepayment certificates. Payment can also be made through Apple Pay, Google Pay, and other major methods.
Is your NHS Prescription delivery really free?
Yes – there’s no charge for delivery. We cover this cost, and all medicines are sent via Royal Mail’s Tracked service for peace of mind. If you usually pay for NHS prescriptions, you’ll pay the standard fee of £9.90 per item (as of 1st May 2024). There are no extra costs for using our service.
How do I nominate The Family Chemist for my NHS prescriptions?
It’s quick and easy! You can nominate us by completing our registration form online or calling our team on 0115 850 1944. Once nominated, your prescriptions will automatically come to us—no extra effort required.
What information do I need to sign up?
When registering, we’ll ask for:
Your full name and date of birth
Your GP surgery details
A list of your regular medication
Your NHS number (optional, but helps speed up registration)
Do I need to speak to my GP before using your service?
Not necessarily. If your GP already issues electronic prescriptions, you can nominate The Family Chemist to receive your scripts automatically—no need to visit or call them every time. However, if you’re starting a new medication or have any specific concerns, it’s always wise to consult your GP directly. Our pharmacists are also available to support you throughout the process.
What happens after I register?
Once you’ve signed up, we’ll connect your account with the NHS and confirm your GP surgery. From there, you can manage your medicines and update delivery details.
When should I place my order?
Please order your repeat prescription 10 working days before you run out. This allows time for your GP to approve the request, and for us to check, dispense, and dispatch your medication securely.
While orders often arrive faster, the 10-day window ensures you won’t be caught short.
I don’t pay for prescriptions. Can I still use your service?
Yes. Just let us know your exemption reason when signing up or update it anytime in your account under the ‘Exemptions’ section.
Can I use my NHS prepayment certificate (PPC)?
Yes. We accept both standard and HRT-only PPCs. Simply upload your certificate details in your account so we can apply it automatically when you order.
Need help?
Visit our Help Centre anytime for quick answers to common queries. If you prefer to speak to someone, our UK-based support team is here to help by phone or email.
How long does delivery take?
Most medicines are delivered using Royal Mail Tracked 48 (2–3 days). Refrigerated or urgent items are sent via Tracked 24. Either way, you’ll be kept informed every step of the way.
Can I change my delivery address?
Of course. Simply go to your account and update your delivery details on the NHS dashboard.
What makes The Family Chemist different from other online pharmacies?
We’re not just another digital pharmacy—we’re a family-run team that puts people before parcels. Our service is personal, efficient, and driven by care. With qualified UK-based pharmacists on hand, a 99.995% dispensing accuracy rate, and a top-rated customer satisfaction score on Trustpilot, you’re in safe hands from start to finish.
Can I speak to someone if I need help ordering or managing my prescriptions?
Yes! Our UK-registered pharmacists are available Monday to Friday, 9.00am–5.00pm. Whether it’s about side effects, dosage, or interactions, we’re here to help. Call us on 0115 850 1944 or email your query to enquiries@thefamilychemist.co.uk and a pharmacist will respond as soon as possible.
Can I receive my medication at a different address (e.g. work or carer’s home)?
Absolutely. We deliver to any UK address that suits you—your home, workplace, a family member, or even a trusted neighbour. You can also nominate a safe place for delivery if you’re not in. Delivery is completely free, discreet, and tracked via Royal Mail or DPD, depending on parcel size. Update your delivery settings anytime via your online account.
Is the packaging discreet?
Yes. All medicines are dispatched in plain, unbranded packaging—no logos, no pharmacy name, and no indication of what’s inside. We value your privacy just as much as you do.
What if I miss my delivery?
No problem. If you’re not available at the time of delivery, Royal Mail or DPD will leave a card with instructions for redelivery or collection. You can also choose a safe place for your delivery in advance. If you need support, call us on 0115 850 1944 and our team will assist.
How do I pay for my NHS repeat prescription?
If you’re exempt from charges, let us know during registration. If you pay for prescriptions, we’ll email you a secure payment link once we receive your GP’s script. All payments must be made by 4pm to ensure same-day dispatch. We accept all major cards and NHS prepayment certificates.
