FAQs

Differin is indicated for topical treatment of mild to moderate acne where whiteheads, blackheads and red bumps predominate. This gel is an excellent step up from benzoyl peroxide treatment. However, it can also be used alongside oral antibiotics such as lymecycline capsules.  Differin is a prescription only medicine which comes in a gel and cream form and its active ingredient is Adapalene 1mg/g. Adapalene belongs to a class of medicines called Retinoids. Retinoids work by exfoliating the skin by removing dead skin cells which helps prevent them building up within hair follicles. Retinoids also help reduce inflammation, pain and irritation by preventing build-up of skin cells and inflammatory responses.

Differin gel should be applied once daily before going to bed and after washing. Make sure you dry the skin before application. A thin film should be applied with the fingertips avoiding the eyes, lips, and nostrils. Wash hands thoroughly after use.

Treatment should be continued for 8 weeks and if there is no improvement then it should be discontinued. Normally patients will see clearance of acne or major improvements after 3 months of continuous use. If satisfied stop using differin although differin can be used for long term if needed. Non comedogenic and non-astringent cosmetics can be used.

Differin can be used with Duac or Acnecide. Differin should be applied at a different time if using with other topical medicines.

A gel is recommended for greasier skin and a cream is more acceptable for drier skin.

The common side effects include redness or soreness in the first couple of days. If the degree of local irritation is moderate to severe then the medication should be used less frequently or discontinued temporarily until the symptoms subside. If the inflammation is unbearable and severe then treatment should be stopped.

If product enters the eye, wash immediately with warm water. The product should not be applied to either broken (cut and abrasions) sunburnt or eczematous skin, nor should it be used in patients with severe acne involving large areas of the body. Exposure to sunlight and UV light irradiation should be minimised during use of Differin Gel.

Patients who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy or allergic to the active substance or its excipients. Use with caution during breast feeding. Avoid in people with severe acne, perioral dermatitis, rosacea or a personal or family history of non-melanoma skin cancer.
